First thing first, what is a graduate programme?

Well, it’s not an internship, and it’s not a typical entry-level position either. A Graduate Programme is rigorous and highly selective. It seeks to attract recent graduates with the greatest potential to rotate through multiple roles in an organization, giving them extensive exposure to a variety of jobs in the field. Each organization has a unique programme design. The good news is that some employers will consider candidates with up to three years of work experience.

Why are these fresh grads getting paid, well…just to learn?

Many graduate training programs are highly competitive, especially those offered by prestigious companies or organizations with well-established programs. The number of applicants relative to the available positions can influence the competitiveness of the selection process. Many programs accept only 20–30 candidates out of thousands of applications.

The qualifications and criteria for admission to a graduate training program can vary widely. While some programs may consider academic achievements such as GPA, others may prioritize relevant experiences, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, and interpersonal skills. Many graduate training programs include interviews and assessments as part of the selection process. Candidates may be evaluated based on their communication skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and alignment with the organization’s values and culture. One community member shared, “Just for context to those who may wonder about the interview process – I interviewed with one of the big consultant firms when I was a fresh grad, and was requested to work on a case that night itself. I went back and presented a thousand-word proposal complete with financial projections the next day. Definitely a memorable interview experience.“

One of them shared her experience of getting hired in one of these programs: “Life is harder once we get hired. Many lowball offers because our starting price is very high. It’s very hard to jump to other companies because the pay increment seems not to be worth it. Hence, we’re often stuck in the current company for awhile, despite the unfavourable work environment.”
